Last october the 2nd, we went to Sommeron, near La Capelle, en Thiérache .
We visited an alpaca farm at the « cour Farroux », during an excursion organized by UTEL . We received a warm welcome by Brigitte and Didier Chatelin, the breeders .
Both are professional and passionate people who love their animals and take care of them with enthusiasm .
We discovered a lot of things about these gentle and curious animals .
The alpaca is a small camelid most often native from Peru or South America . The baby is named « the cria « , it weighs 7 to 8 kgs . Adult ,it weighs between 60 and 80 kgs .
There are 22 official colors, the main colors are grey, black, red, white ,cream and the famous spotted brown coat named » Appaloosa ».
Alpacas have to be sheared once a year, usually in May .The quantity of wool is about 3 kgs and a half . Alpaca wool is warm and very soft .
Don’t hesitate to visit the alpaca farm, you’ll enjoy it a lot !
